When the 5000-year-old djinni Bartimaeus is summoned by Nathaniel, a young magician's apprentice, he expects to have to do nothing more taxing than a little levitation or a few simple illusions. But Nathaniel is a precocious talent and has something rather more dangerous in mind: revenge. Against his will, Bartimaeus is packed off to steal the powerful Amulet of Samarkand from Simon Lovelace, a master magician of unrivalled ruthlessness and ambition. Before long, both djinni and apprentice are caught up in a terrifying flood of murder and rebellion. For Lovelace, at the centre of government intrigue, will spare no one ... Book One of THE BARTIMAEUS TRILOGY, this is a brilliant, unputdownable, electrifying thriller, laced with humour, power, ambition and revenge.

This book is such a treat! Stroud provides intricate detail while maintaing a steady pace - you won't want to put this book down! Bartimeaus has the perfect balance of humour and arrogance so that he does not seem overbearing, while Nathaniels' arrogance is kept in check (from being annoying) by his fallibility. This story line is a complete gem. It may not have received the same publicity as other wizarding non-fiction, but it should not be compared to them, anyway. This book holds its own, and is well worth the read, be you child or adult!

Bartimaeus: arrogant and hilarious. Nathaniel: arrogant and unlikable. Not sure why that was such a winning combination, but it was! The story is complex, funny and imaginative. Can't wait to read the next one. Would recommend to 9+.

This is the first in a series describing Nathaniel's tenuous journey into magic with the help of Batimaeus. Listen to it on audio - you can't stop!

A great, interresting, and fun book. The plot is well written with lots of imagination and uses humour throughout. I really enjoyed the unravelling of the plot and the writing style with the different POVs.

the Bartimaeus trilogy is one of the best works of fantasy ever written, Stroud take the time to fully imagine and describe a fictional alternate history. The trilogy has an excelent plot, and weves together thew POVs of all three of the main characters, one from each section of the world: Nathaniel, a government employee and magician, Bartimaeus, a djini, and Kitty, a member of the resistance. Altogether, a masterpiece.

“It sounds to me, young one," Haddek said, "that you are searching for something that cannot be found." "The truth?" Sazed asked. "No," Haddek replied. "A religion that requires no faith of its believers."
