Add a CommentThe book is so much better the movies. In my opinion, Emma in the book is more spolied and stuck up how they portray her in the movies, but you love her for faults. Read before you watch or if you seen the many movie adaptations, take the time to read.
This book was a window into the lives of the upper-class in England's Victorian age. Although the story moved very slowly and was somewhat predictable, Austen's writing was charming.
I wouldn't have read this if it wasn't for tutor, but it was actually quite good. Loved how Emma marries Mr. Knightley in the end. The ending is so sweet! Mrs. Elton is so full of herself! Harriet has changed a lot. There were quite a lot of funny parts.
Not my favourite Jane Austen novel, but is still worth the read. Lots of dialogue in this novel that may seem unnecessary the first time reading it but does serve a noticeable purpose upon subsequent readings.
Re-reading these with my daughter I was amazed how often we laughed out loud. An example from Emma:" A young person, who either marries or dies, is sure of being kindly spoken of"
"Virginia Woolf said of Austen, 'For a great writer, she was the most difficult to catch in the act of greatness,' which is a fantastic line. You're drawn into the story, and you come out the other end, and you know you've seen something great in action. But you can't see the pyrotechnics; there's nothing flashy." J.K. Another great novel by Jane Austen-I loved it!
The most perfect romance novel.
