After he was taken in and nursed back to health by the people of a Pakistani village, he promised to return one day and build them a school. From that rash, earnest promise grew one of the most incredible humanitarian campaigns of our time--Mortenson's one-man mission to counteract extremism by building schools, especially for girls, throughout the breeding ground of the Taliban. In a region where Americans are often feared and hated, he has survived kidnapping, fatwas issued by enraged mullahs, death threats, and wrenching separations from his wife and children. But his success speaks for itself--at last count, his Central Asia Institute had built fifty-five schools.--From publisher description.

The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family, and for our family, we are prepared to do anything, even die. Doctor Greg, you must take time to share three cups of tea. We may be uneducated but we are not stupid. We have lived and survived here for a long time.’ "

Add a CommentOverall, Three Cups of Tea is a small glimpse into the work done in Pakistan and Afghanistan by Greg Mortenson. However, I found the work more like a report rather than a story. There were some problems with the actual writing of the book- mixed tenses and perspective being a few. I would recommend The Young Reader's Edition of Three Cups of Tea which includes essential maps, and glosseries.
I heard hes in questioning to see if half of what he wrote is actually true
this book is boring and I heard hes in questioning right now to see if the book is actually true... who knows what hes done with all the money
Three Cups of Tea is the story of how one man made a difference in the lives of many through perseverance and the sheer force of his will. Greg Mortenson was a determined mountain climber who made a fundamental error when descending from a climb on K2. Having lost his way, he eventually ended up in a village whose members nursed him back to health and offered him a level of hospitality he had never before experienced. This profound incident moved Mortenson to make a vow that he would build a school for that village to ensure its future survival and prosperity. This book is a memoir of the events leading up to that first school and the many more that came after it. The work Mortenson does takes a political turn after the events of 9/11, when the eyes of the world turned upon the region of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson continued his work while trying to explain to a Western public not only what he was doing, but why it should matter to the rest of us. It is a heart-warming tale of an inexperienced fund raiser determined to make a difference.
A better and more objective writer probably would have written a better book, but I loved how Mortenson was so totally disorganised at first, and managed to achieve immense results with only sheer determination and a talent at getting people to work together for a noble goal. Having travelled to the Indian side of Baltistan, I also particularly enjoyed the rare and multi-dimentional description of this fascinating part of the world. One image particularly stood out: Mortenson says that for the cost of one Tomahawk missible (close to one million $), it's possible to build dozens of schools providing tens of thousands of kids with a proper nonextremist education over the course of a generation! "Which do you think will make us more secure?", he asks. Canada on its own could change the face of the Middle East only with the 20 billion $ that Harper wants to spend on those new jet bombers!
Wow this book should be required reading especially for anyone with any kind of opinion about the Middle East. Greg Mortenson is a true hero and an amazing person. I couldn't put this book down and would highly recommend it to everyone.
Mortensons trip to K2 and his incredible works in building schools for children in Paskistan.Have done more to promote peace in this area than any other military or aid organization.
This is an incredible story of one person who is making a difference. It's a book I'm planning to buy because the proceeds the sale helps in the work.
Though it's true that this book is a little slow at time and that one can get lost in all of the different names (of places, people, etc)., I adore it! I forced myself to read the last few chapters really slowly so that I could immerse myself into this book a few more times. Fact of the matter is, in a time where we can't watch the news without hearing the words "terrorism" or "suicide bomber" (etc.), it is truly inspiring to read a book that treats the matter with respect and empathy. I recommend this book to everyone that I know.
This was the best book. I read it for a book club group, then found out the author was going to be speaking the night our book club was to meet. So some of us got to see him! Very inspiring.
