Add a Commentoverall, this fantasy novel is very good and holds your interest. however, juliet marrillier's writing, on the opening chapters, was very slow and somewhat boring. i know that she was building a world for the reader, but she could have been quicker about same, and added more action at the start of this novel. i almost put it down and didn't want to come back to same. however, the reader in me usually wants to finish a book that she's started, and so i began to read this novel again. i like the world that marillier has created. seven very bright children, all with different personalities, and all with dreams of their own. i also liked the fact that this ancient irish society seemed to value women, and their magical/healing abilities. women also seemed to have some power of autonomy in this society. i am glad that sorcha discovered her own healing abilities. the spell that the enchanter cast on sorcha, however, was rather frustrating. it definitely limited sorcha's movements and speech. couldn't marillier have conducted another spell? something that would let our hurting heroine have some freedom of movement/speech? this aspect of the novel just did not work. if you are wanting a strong heroine, sorcha fits the "bill" to a certain extent.
Daughter of the Forest is the first in the Sevenwaters trilogy by an author who seems to have been strongly influenced by Marion Zimmer Bradely of the Mists of Avalon fame. Daughter of the Forest retells the folk story of the six brothers who were turned into swans by an evil enchantress, this time setting it in an ancient Ireland at war with the Britons. Sorcha, their sister, must remain silent and sew six shirts using a particular material to release them. While Sorcha is a sympathetic and likable character, Marillier's description and prose can be a bit heavy-handed at times. But if you're looking for fantasy with a strong female lead, definitely add this one to your list.
One of my friends reccomended this and i wasn't reallly keen in reading but when I started to read it I just couldn't put it down.It is a really good book and I Loved it.I think they should make a movie because if they did it would be 1 of the best movies ever. SHE IS 1 OF MY FAVOURITE AUTHORS <3(")>
I would recommend all her books. She is a Wonderful story teller. I hope we get many more books from Juliet, but she has been fighting Cancer since last year. So she is in my prayers. I would also recommend Jules Watson. She is my second best Author.
a well written book based on a well known legend. a very good read. I am ready to go on to the next book of the series.
A good fantasy story with interesting characters.
My new favourite author! I love her style. What a story teller.
Great new fantasy writer. Very lyrical writing. Strong characters.
So happy to have discovered a new author whose books I want to read them all. She's a true storyteller and I didn't mind at all the "feminist" undertone of her stories. I love strong female characters and if Juliet makes them bettern than the males ones I love it. After reading some modern style books and contemporary stories going back to Julie's books it's like discovering again the style of writing that keeps me reading late into the night.
I really enjoyed this book (my favourite of the trilogy). It was very engaging, and the main character was such a strong young woman.
