Add a SummaryWhen Zoey gets "Marked" her whole life changes. She has to go to the House Of Night a high school for vampyres like herself. Its great if you complete all four years but if your body regects the change...you die. A different take on school through a diferent species. Zoey has a rough life dealing with all the stuff shes going throught... she has a human boyfriend, while dating a vampyres that she thinks she in love with.
Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird lives in a world where vampyres have always existed. New vampyres, called fledglings, appear through a biologic process that takes place in some humans, the Marked, at puberty and lasts four years. At the beginning of the book, Zoey is at school when she is Marked by a Tracker. As news spread, she is quickly deserted by friends and close family, who are part of an anti-vampyre group. She flees to her grandmother and on the way has a vision with the vampyre's goddess, Nyx who chooses her as her representative. Zoey wakes up at the house of night in the presence of her grandmother and the vampyre headmaster- Who is also her future mentor, Neferet. She finds out that her Mark is all filled in, like that of an adult vampyre, a sign of the goddess' favor. There she quickly befriends her roommate, Stevie Rae, and through her, Damien, Erin and Shaunee. Zoey discovers that she has affinities for the five elements, air, fire, earth, water, and spirit, being the first in vampyre history. Because of her uniqueness, Zoey also attracts the attention of the new High Priestess in training, Aphrodite. To humiliate her, Aphrodite invites her to a Dark Daughters ritual where she tricks her into drinking blood. Embarrassed, Zoey flees, it is then when she is chosen by a cat, whom she names Nala (because she looks likea little lioness). Shortly after Zoey finds a disillusioned Heath (her almost Ex-boyfriend), along with Kayla (her Ex-bestfriend) trying to bust her out (They were high and drunk),Kayla becomes annoying and Zoey threatens her, Kayla becomes frightened by Zoeys threat and leaves, at this point Zoey scratches Heath accidentally and drinks from Him and they Imprint. It is shortly after that she meets Erik Night and they soon become, friends, after a short kiss outside the girls dorm.

ALMOST similar to Harry Potter in the sense that its a school for a different species to learn how to control there different behavior. Great summer read!

I wasn't at all sure I would like this young adult novel. The story of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen year old girl who is unhappy at home, becoming "marked" as a fledgling vampyre, just seemed a bit forced. I wanted to feel a part of her story but her angst was overwhelming and I couldn't really see where the plot was headed. However, about midway through, the book picked up steam and by the last few chapters, I was eagerly turning the pages in order to find out how Zoey's unusual powers would manifest and where it all would lead. Marked is an imaginative take on vampyres, weaving "old" pagan religious themes throughout and incorporating ancient history into its background. I liked the idea of a society where vampyrism is openly known and accepted, and I liked the School of Night where fledgling vampyres are taken for further training. I loved Zoey's learning to accept herself and step up as a leader at the school, and even the cursing seems realistic. What I didn't like was the obvious prejudice against traditional religion, and the "mini-sermons" we receive early on against drugs, drinking, and oral sex from Zoey's point of view. I liked Zoey's friends but felt that her acceptance into such a tight group so immediately didn't ring true, and I had to wonder at just why Erik, the hot young vampyre, was so attracted so quickly to Zoey. There are also some very lucky coincidences, such as Zoey's Native American grandmother having taught her purification rites which come in very handy. Thankfully these annoyances were overcome by the general storytelling and the excitement of the last half of the book.

Add a CommentI love this series. I'm addicted!
I just started it and I like it so far.
this book is so amazing.. can wait to read more of the series, this book is very good, this book is the nicest most greatest book ever.... hope the rest of the book is good like this one...
Good for a quick read if you're an adult who enjoys YA Fantasy like me. Kind of a weird mash-up of Vampire/Ghosties/Witches/Native American Folklore going on, that I'm not too sure about... still, I am carrying on with the next book in the series! For now I want to know what's going to happen.
I've had this book on my "For Later" shelf for over a year now, so when I finally put a hold on it, I hadn't seen the not-so-great recent reviews. That being said, I was really excited to read this book as I've seen a lot of really good reviews on it, and I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't. The characters, setting, storyline, etc. were okay, but they definitely didn't hold my attention. No matter what time of day I read this book (middle of the day, late at night), it literally put me to sleep, and I had to struggle just to stay awake and read it. A little more than halfway through, I pretty must just fast-read and skimmed it, if only to finish it. I might have been less harsh on this book if I had read it a couple years ago (like when I was 14 or something), but I still don't think I would have particularly enjoyed it. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book. If you're looking for a vampire story, there are much better alternatives than this book.
Now that I'm finished, I liked this. It has a very unusual take on vampire mythology and the heroine is strong and has a great voice. I want to like it more than I did. But I found it surprisingly difficult to stick with, and often put it down to read something else (which is in sharp contrast with Vampire Academy which I literally brought everywhere to keep reading). There is some good action in the second half of the book, but I still never felt like I HAD to finish. I'm not sure why it didn't totally grab me, because it was a really cool take on vampire lore.
Well, this book was a disappointment. Because it's such a popular series (at least that's what I've heard), I had high expectations and wowza was it bad. I didn't like the characters, the plot was scattered and weak, and the writing was awful. That's just my opinion. I know lots of people rave about this series but I certainly won't be reading the sequels.
I'd like to say that this is more a critique of the entire series and that there may be spoilers. When I first started reading this series, I liked it. The books were very easy to read and were quite fun. I'm a huge fan of fantasy that incorporates high school elements because they are quite swell and relatable (though I graduated two years ago). At times the book was difficult to get through because it didn't hold my interest at times. But still, I grew to like what I was reading. However, I didn't like the author dropping obvious hints about drugs and sex (which at times contradicted what she was saying). I believe in the first book it was Zoey who was telling Aphrodite not to smoke pot because "drugs are bad mkay". That isn't to say they aren't, it was just obvious that there was a message being conveyed; if you smoke pot then you're a bitch like Aphrodite. But that may be taking it to an extreme, so I'm open to the possibility that the author was trying to say what the D.A.R.E. program has been trying (and failing) to convey for years: drugs are detrimental to your health and you should abstain from them. So what's wrong with that? It doesn't belong in a teen fiction novel as such books are for entertainment. What teenager wants to read what they've been hearing from teachers and their parents for years? What makes the author think that the teenager is going to take it in stride? Well Zoey doesn't do it so I won't either! Right. Seems like I'm beating the drug message to death. I'll move on now. Another message the author cares to reiterate at the beginning of every book (after which the events take place) is that "don't give up your virginity so easily". This is after Zoey "gives it up" to her teacher after believing they were in love (of course he was a jerk b/c he was working w/ Neferet). This is besides the fact that Zoey has about 4 romantic love interests: Erik, the hot boy in drama class, Heath, her ex-boyfriend who refuses to take a hint (soon after becoming her meatbag because she's retarded), Kalona, the super sexy demon lord who was her lover in a past life, and James Stark, new kid who eventually becomes her personal guard. Zoey even jokes at one point to herself about being a "slut". The virginity message and slut comment are as antifeminist as you can get. Any girl/woman who reads this series and doesn't get REALLY pissed off is a giant moron. The value of virginity is purely an anglo-saxon concept, it's also pure bullshit. And slut? Anyone who reads this book and has a problem with Zoey immediately labels her that because she's juggling 4 guys around. Nevermind the fact men can sleep around all they want and all they get is a high five. If there's anything to criticize it's the fact that 4 guys like her, which brings me to my next point: Zoey is a Mary Sue. My reasons? For starters, Zoey has lots and lots of pretty markings, while the typical teenage vampire only has one. Zoey also has power over all the elements. Then there's the fact that she's a reincarnation of some indian princess who was in love with a hot evil man/vampire/whatthehelleverhewas. There's also the fact that she was able to seduce a teacher (yeah he betrayed her, so what). She also got in with the hot drama boy and the hot new kid. Her ex-boyfriend won't leave her alone. She's a high priestess in training. She outsmarts Neferet and Aphrodite (and actually befriends Aphrodite). The author might as well have Zoey write the damn story how she wants it. The only saving grace of this series is that it has more going on than Twilight ever did. However, that's also it's downfall. Read at your own risk.
Good book!! I started this series a week and a half ago, and i'm already on the third book!! I just can't seem to put them down. I liked that the vampyres in this book weren't anything like the ones in Twilight! It was different and not at all repetitive!
I read this book a long time ago and am now rereading it. Great book that is followed by at least 9 more books. I can't wait to read them all.
