Previously a police detective and now imprisoned as a conscientious objector, Douglas Kingsley is sent to France in order to secure a conviction. As he conducts his investigations amidst The Third Battle of Ypres, Kingsley soon finds himself questioning the honour of saving a man from the gallows if he is only to return to a suicide battle. As the gap between legally-sanctioned and illegal murder becomes evermore blurred, Kingsley quickly learns that truth is the first casualty of war.
