… More »Malcolm Fox and his team from Internal Affairs are back. They've been sent to Fife to investigate whether fellow cops covered up for a corrupt colleague, Detective Paul Carter. Carter has been found guilty of misconduct with his own uncle, also in the force, having proved to be his nephew's nemesis. But what should be a simple job is soon complicated by intimations of conspiracy and cover-up - and a brutal murder, a murder committed with a weapon that should not even exist. The spiralling investigation takes Fox back in time to 1985, a year of turmoil in British political life. Terrorists intent on a split between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom were becoming more brazen and ruthless, sending letter-bombs and poisonous spores to government offices, plotting kidnaps and murder, and trying to stay one step ahead of the spies sent to flush them out.Fox has a duty to get at the truth, while the body count rises, the clock starts ticking, and he fights for his professional and personal life.

Add a CommentI didn't like this one nearly as much as "The Complaints." The ending was forced, it was the proverbial rabbit pulled out of a hat at the last minute to make the book work and to supposedly make the reader gasp
I enjoyed this - Fox is being a bit of a rebel by being "a true detective" - not what people expect from someone in "Complaints".
Malcom Fox book 2
Agree with those who say this is "typical Rankin" and "a good read".
The Complaints was the first Malcolm Fox book, not The Impossible Dead.
It was hard, reading the 1st Inspector Fox book. Kept wanting Rebus to stagger into the police station or show up on a street corner... This book was better. Layers added to the Fox character. Terrific plot. I found I did not miss Rebus and his 47 glasses of Scotch. Fox is nicer, calmer, and saner !
Another excellent read, with the mystery of Edinburgh as the backdrop, Fox from "The Complaints" makes a victorious return. Very enjoyable.
Rankin writes a good, complex and witty police novel. This one features Malcolm Fox as an internal affairs man but always seems to find more than what he intended. An enjoyable read
From an internal investigation of 3 police officers to murder committed both in the present and in the past , the plotting in this story is simply amazing! One piece of evidence leads to the next and eventually branches off to secondary pieces of evidence which then become the raison d' etre for this mystery story. Rankin's latest Fox mystery is a page turner, but it is nice to put the book down knowing how enjoyable it will be to return to the world of Malcolm Fox.
Another great read from Rankin. Second in the "Complaints" (Internal Affairs) series with the complex and interesting Malcolm Fox and his team. A complicated and intriguing story which kept me guessing til the end. As usual, Edinburgh and it's surrounds is a character into itself. Highly recommended.
