Winner of Australian "Indies" Fiction Book of the Year 2012. One family. Nine momentous days. An unforgettable novel of love and folly and heartbreak. It is 1939 and Australia is about to go to war. Deep in the working-class Melbourne suburb of Richmond it is business--your own and everyone elses--as usual. And young Kip Westaway, failed scholar and stablehand, is living the most important day of his life. Ambitious in scope and structure, triumphantly realised, this is a novel about one family and every family. It is about dreams and fights and sacrifices. And finally, of course, it is--as it must be--about love. Toni Jordan has a BSc in physiology and qualifications in marketing and professional writing. Her debut novel, "Addition," has been published in sixteen countries and won numerous awards. Jordan lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Looking forward to reading this book after reading this story behind its inspiration - a real unidentified photo (on the cover) from Melbourne in 1940. http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/books/the-novels-real-but-the-mystery-remains-20120818-24fev.html This disappointed me somewhat. Each chapter was a glimpse into the lives of family members immediately prior to WW2 to present day Melbourne, not clearly apparent at first, you needed to look for clues for the connections. I liked the early time period stories best, and the author did well to evoc the time period in which she wrote.
