Rachel's world is confined to the protective walls around her city. Beyond them are violent wanderers, extreme terrain, and a danger straight out of legend: a beast called the Cursed One that devastates everything in its path. When Rachel's father goes missing, she is desperate to search for him. But her attempts to flee the city bring her to the attention of its overbearing ruler. His efforts to control her make the world within the walls seem as dangerous as that outside. Her only chance at escape is Logan. Once her father's apprentice, and now her only protector, he feels that helping her might mean losing her completely. But if he can put his feelings aside, they might be able to save more than Rachel's father. They might be able to break down the walls, and set their people free.

Amazing book!!!!! I loved the plot, the characters, the setting and the pace. The plot was extremely interesting: A girl who's father is missing and pronounced dead. She is put into the care of her father's apprentice, who 2 years earlier she gave her heart too and had it handed back to her. They both promise to find her father while avoiding the power hungry leader of their city. The characters were well written and I loved them all. Rachel was strong, intelligent, and funny. Logan was also very intelligent and brave. The other characters such as Oliver, the commander, and Quinn were very well written and had unique personalitites. The setting is in a world that has been almost completely destroyed by a creature and continues to be terrorized. The pace was fast and the storyline had many twists. I loved this book and can't wait until the next one Deception comes out!!

A good read, but mostly predictable as to what will happen. I hope that the second one answers more questions and that the story isn't dragged out to make a trilogy.

Amazing story. Just when you think you figured out where the story is going, new plot twists. Could not put it down. Totally enthralling. I am excited for the sequel!

It started off really strong, and kind of plateaued. I was really into the characters and the plot, but halfway through the characters seemed to stagnate. Same thoughts, with no new depth added. The plot remained interesting, but I began to be indifferent toward the characters. Worth reading, but just not an exceptional book.

Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city's brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father's apprentice, Logan--the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same one who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but a fierce belief in her father's survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her. At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city's top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor's impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared. As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can't be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.
