Shlyamalan is BACK! and in James McAvoy he has found another star collaborator like Bruce Willis, and in Anya Taylor-Joy another talented young actor to play opposite a la Haley Joel Osment. Too bad we had to wait 15 years and suffer through films like Signs, but finally I can give one of his movies a unqualified endorsement.

James McAvoy is an incredible actor! Such an incredible feat to make microchanges that will allow the audience to distinguish the various personalities.

I gave this movie three stars. This was mainly for the acting of all main characters.
Did I like the movie? No, I did not. Call me old fashion, but I really don't like to see any movie where females are abused, hurt, or terrified. People like the main character should be locked away forever.

James McAvoy did an outstanding job just to keep the different personalities in order. Pretty amazing job on his part. Split was a good chiller.

Too weird for my taste.

Another masterpiece by M. Night Shyamalan about a split personality / multiple identity guy (Kevin) who takes on 23 different personalities and abducts three teenage girls. Low budget ($9 million) movie without any special effects or cool music but it did its job -- and grossed $278 million in box office sales. At one point I almost walked out but I'm glad I stayed to the end (I won't spoil the ending). Fascinating complex look (mostly through dialog) at the inner workings of a very screwed up mind.

I can't believe I didn't review this before. I actually have to admit that I think M. Night Shyamalan is a decent filmmaker, but I think where he really thrives is his writing. Often I think his stories would be better suited in book form as the performances of the actors can fall a bit flat in all the exposition. It really helps to be a fan of his before delving into this one. ANYWHO. This is a pretty great film. The less you know about it, the more enjoyable the movie watching experience is. The "multiple personalities" plotline is something I usually take issue with as mental health in America is typically seen, as it is here, like something out of a horror movie instead of a treatable disorder. However, the way that idea is utilized in this film is almost completely unique and fresh in perspective. I've yet to see a disappointing performance from James McAvoy and this is no exception.

James McAvoy is a brilliant actor, and that is the only reason this movie has 4 stars. The plot is confusing, his purpose is equally confusing, and the breaks into metaphysical philosophy are disracting and kill the tension.

This man has multiple personalities and is a murder. I can't recommend it to anyone.

Tons of quotes in IMDb but not:

DID P1 of 2:
One identity in an individual with Dissociative Identity Disorder can have high cholesterol. One. There have been cases where one identity is allergic to bee stings. The others are not. Are there moments where two identities can coexist at the same time? There are times when two identities can take the "light" or "the spot" or consciousness at the same time. This happened with a student that I was working with. And her left and right hand were taking notes in different hand-writings about separate things at the same time.

DID P2 of 2:

The differences in the identities can be dramatic. As much as the difference between you and me and every person in that auditorium. The identities have different IQ's. They have different physical strengths. One personality is a Russian weightlifter and can lift three times his body weight. Their ability to hyper-focus and have different experiences is astounding. Have these individuals, through their suffering, unlocked the potential of the brain? Is this the ultimate doorway to all things we call unknown? Is this where our sense of the supernatural comes from?
