I really want to like this book, but can't. The plot sounds great but it's painful to read all the recaps in dialogue. So. Many. Recaps.
I really did not need to have a summary of events delivered to me, each time the main character encountered somebody new.
The plot was hindered due to those excessive and repetitive explanations and declarations, made by the protagonist, to all the characters around him.
Ugh. It happened every time! "Oh, no! Here we go again!"

This and the other books in the Matthew Swift series are a delight to read.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book (hence, no rating to go with this comment), but I will say that the depiction of magic in this book is unlike anything else I've read, and it's breatheaking. I will also warn readers that the book isn't divided into chapters, just several very long sections, so if you're like me and find it hard to put down a book mid-chapter, you might have trouble getting to bed at a good hour.

Should have been interesting but I got bored. An author who likes to hear himself talk and a protagonist who has power and no clue what to do with it

This is brilliant urban fantasy book. Incredibly well written, and an amazing take on the typical urban fantasy genre. I loved the distinctions made between the differing types of magic, and how they have evolved with the advent of cities. I cannot recommend this book heartily enough to fans of the genre.

Suspend disbelief as you enter the world of a sorcerer. Riveting and vivid descriptive prose, that I have not encountered in my many many years of reading! So fascinating, you lose track of time, and hate to put the book down. Kate Griffin's books should be classics!

Kate Griffin is my new favorite author. Her Matthew Swift series (A Madness of Angels is book 1) is an energetic - almost frenetic at times - fast-paced, occasionally brutal urban fantasy novel. The magic of London is easily imaginable in New York, the writing is unique, and the creativity is off the charts. Loved this book. Have devoured each volume since.
