In the tranquil seaside town of Monterey, California, nothing is quite as it seems. Doting moms, successful husbands, adorable children, beautiful homes: What lies will be told to keep their perfect worlds from unraveling? Told through the eyes of three mothers - Madeline, Celeste and Jane - Big Little Lies paints a picture of a town fueled by rumors and divided into the haves and have-nots, exposing the conflicts, secrets and betrayals that compromise relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbors.Based on the New York Times number-one bestseller of the same name by Liane Moriarty, this seven-part limited series is a subversive, darkly comedic drama that weaves a tale of murder and mischief as it explores society's myth of perfection and the contradictions that exist beneath our idealized faade of marriage, sex, parenting and friendship.

Mediocre viewing. On the whole, I found the majority of the characters distasteful; 40-50 year olds with the emotional maturity of teenagers. Paradoxically, the children were uncomfortably portrayed as small adults (essentially "props" for their parents). There seemed to be a weird "empowered woman" message underlying the series, but the women's actions were entirely contingent on external events and their beliefs about the perceptions of others. Having said all that, I'll probably watch Season 2 to see if any characters develop some internal integrity. Keep your expectations low if you decide to check it out.

Could Monterey really have so many totally awful people. Good acting, great scenery, but didn’t want to watch unpleasant, neurotic people constantly arguing, swearing, and abusive sex.

I enjoyed watching this TV series, written for TV by David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, etc), amply-paced and well-directed. Who would have thought that behind the beautiful facade lies a dark secret within. It was worth my time watching all 7 episodes in just 2 nights.

The womens pov as written and directed by a man -- what a unique concept. Why didn't anyone else think of having a man explain how a woman feels. Obviously, only a man can understand -- write and direct --how a woman feels about domestic violence and sexual assault. The ending of this series is the way a man would solve the problem -- through violence. really surprised the writer didn't figure out a way to have a subplot about a mexican drug cartel with graphic scenes of torture.
There are So few women directors because the Hollywood/T.V. celebration of violence can only be fully realized by a man. Next real life shoot out -- admit you love it America

I don't know which one I enjoyed better, the book or the TV series! Both fantastic and a story line that will suck you in.

Big Little Lies in an explosive drama filled with intrigue, tension and suspense. The show follows the lives of the women and mothers caught up in a murder investigation and tied to each other through their children and community. This HBO series was also adapted from the popular book written by Australian author Liane Moriarty!

Some twisted lives behind the pretty surfaces. Amazing performances.
