Down in the darkest alleys, there is a killer on the loose. Preying on the city's women, this killer is as precise as he is cruel. As Police Commissioner James Gordon tries to calm the fears of Gotham's citizens over the butcher named Jack the Ripper, the masked vigilante Batman does some detective work of his own, with the help of the sultry and surefooted Selina Kyle.

Honestly how many times is DC going to use this timeline story??? Batman vs. Jack the Ripper - sigh, it has been done and it is boring. The only twist was who was Jack the Ripper and the fact that only Bruce Wayne has his superhero powers - everyone else is just a name.

Gotham By Gaslight was an Elseworlds story before there was an Elseworlds- the DC line of occasional one shot tales putting heroes and villains into different times or settings. Pitting a young Bruce Wayne against Jack the Ripper in the streets of Gotham in the aftermath of the Ripper murders in London, the story was stylish and bleak. This animated adaptation takes the premise and tone but tells its own story with different twists and elements, and does so in the general animated style of the television show (albeit in a Gotham of the late 19th century). It even brings in some social commentary along the way, and presents the concept in a way that's all its own. Be mindful though that the rating is there for a reason- this isn't for kids.

I must agree with the comments below - this version of Batman is far superior than the one with live action actors. The story is much better (the storyline is far more original) and the characters far better fleshed out. I would highly recommend it.

Having never experienced any of the Elseworlds stories I wasn't sure what to expect. Gaslight was wonderful tale that while darker than some other Batman stories doesn't go overboard. The principal characters are all very identifiable to their contemporary origins. Should DC choose to, this setting would work rather well for 2-3 seasons worth of TV.

I really enjoy animation so I enjoyed this. I think it is so much better than the actors playing roles. A step back in time but it creates a "what if" moment. Worth the watch

Good batman feature. Not sure how closely it ties to the source material as i haven't read it. May be a little more adult than the others, it is based in the time of Jack "the Ripper" after all. Good to watch if you've watched the others. Nice elseworld tale.

Hi Folks,
First right to basics, its Batman Vs Jack The Ripper in Victorian Gotham. Their will be blood, sexual situations that you would expect. Language (although it was the best use of HS I have ever seen in a story) not over the top, but language non the less. Toss in a little of Dickens's work and you have a really great story. And it is set in the Victorian era. so you will hear actually quite a bit of scripture which was nice. For fans of the original source material like myself, you will also find that WB did a very respectable job of adaptation. So depending on maturity I would say no younger than 13 alone, but probably fine for all with adults present. It is rated R for a reason.

It is hard to top Gotham by gaslight when it is drawn by Mike Mignola. Obviously the art style is completely different in the film than the comic but I thought it held its own. I'd say it is in the middle pack of DC animated films though.

This is not an animation for children, sex and language within.

Steampunk Batman! I liked this comic, but like the movie better. They give Jack the Ripper a new twist in this movie. I liked the storyline and, I always love Batman and Catwoman together, and this movie does not disappoint in this area. I hope they revisit the Batman Elsewhere series more now.
