I still prefer the original which starred Clint Eastwood and Pamelyn Ferdin. But this was an excellent remake of a classic thriller.
It's the end of the Civil War and General Sherman has started his death march in which he burns the entire South, everything in his path. In Virginia a girls' school is still up and running as usual with six girls and two teachers. One of the students comes across a wounded Union soldier who deserted his regiment. They take him in against the better judgment of the headmistress. He immediately begins flirting with all the girls and the teachers. Eventually this all comes to a head when he's supposed to go to one teacher's room and ends up in a students' room instead. Loved it.

I waited months to borrow this movie, and I can now say that it was NOT worth the wait! Very disappointed, especially with the ridiculous and unnecessary ending

Big disappointment. The book is much better, ditto the original film. After watching it I felt slightly soiled and sorry for the really good actors who are wasted in this seemingly sordid and pointless film.

This was a very good movie, directed by Sophia Coppola. It was well acted & directed with great casting. The storyline created a building tension which ended with a surprise. Recommend.

I have tried twice to watch this film, but "watch" is the wrong word because you can't see anything! I can't believe this film was released as is. You can't see the actors or the costumes or the sets. The movie is invisible! This is the first Sofia film that I hate.

I added this to my list because I'm a big fan of Sophia Coppola, however, I found The Beguiled to be incredibly boring. Maybe if I had actually been able to see what was happening for the majority of the film I would have enjoyed it more.

I guess I liked it better than most people did, although it dragged in parts. I thought the kids were great, as was Nicole Kidman, of course.

I barely remember the Clint Eastwood-Geraldine Page movie, except that Geraldine Page really disturbed me. I thought she was more disturbed than Clint Eastwood.

What a drag. Don't waste your time. I gave up on this book because so painfully slow, thought the movie might do better. Wooden acting, everything filmed in half light. I kept waiting for the actual story to begin and it was over. I can't believe this novel has been made into a movie, not once, but twice

Unsuccessful adaptation of the book of the same name by Sophia Coppola. There is something unfocused in the film which results good actors appearing to not know what it is they're supposed to be doing. I'm with those who prefer the original film, directed by Don Siegel and starring Geraldine Page ( great actress ) and Clint Eastwood.
It's too bad S. Coppola dropped the ball on this one, as it had the potential to be an interesting remake.
