May have rated too high, not sure. Movie favored Tonya as someone who lost a lot because of others. I wonder if all the facts as pictured was true. I do remember thinking when this unfolded that she was trailer trash. Certainly not an uplifting movie to watch.

This movie was really good. I had no desire to watch it but had nothing else to watch. I was impressed. I will definitely watch this again.

When you're considered "white trash" in our "classless" society, you become a target of scorn and condescension. That's why Hollywood felt free to turn Harding, a great skater, into a laughingstock -- a hateful, despicable concept. Yes, Peter Travers of "Rolling Stone" magazine must have felt so superior "laughing [his] head off."

The only good thing about this film is seeing Allison Janney, who played one of my favorite characters in "The West Wing."

P.S. I absolutely agree with what Lucki 32 says in the last paragraph of his (her?) comment.

Twenty years ago I wrote a poem about Tonya considering a possible professional skating career:

Tonya
Tonya Tonya
Chants your adorring crowd
Did they wish you "go break a leg"
Nancy did

outstanding acting from all of the cast. Allison Janney earned that Oscar, and Margot Robbie was perfect as Tonya. It was interesting to this incident from a different point of view. While I still think Tonya is guilty and knew about everything all along, the movie makes you empathetic of her struggle. I do feel more sorry for her than I did before, and that's the beauty of a well done movie! I highly recommend!

I have to hand it to the film makers on this one. This could have been a tawdry Lifetime
movie (and ok, I might have watched it), but instead, it's a wry and shocking (for the right reasons) look at class issues, the figure skating establishment and at its heart, a mother/daughter relationship from hell. Hard to watch but compelling nonetheless. Allison Janney deserves the kudos/awards and if Three Billboards had come out another year, Margot Robbie would have gone home with an Oscar. It was a tad disconcerting to have the wink-wink moments when the characters spoke directly with the viewers and then the next moment hit us with shocking language and domestic violence, but in the end this uncomfortable juxtaposition served the film well.

Best movie of the year easy.

Would have won the Oscar if I was the only one voting.

It was interesting to watch this story from a different point of view. It was definitely biased in favor of Tonya.
The acting was decent, the movie was filled with profanity, which has become a standard in the USA movie production and it contained lots of child and woman abuse.
I guess I do not share the same type of humor like Rolling Stone magazine, since I did not find any part of the movie funny. I did not laugh till it hurt at all. It was actually horrifying to watch. Many serial killers are brought up like this in such abuse. This was like a manual for how not to bring up your child.
Glad I found the original unbiased movie from 1994 on youtube. That's worth watching!
The last thing to say was that I was shocked by the fact that no matter how good your are at what you do and how big your talents is, in this country it is all about your image. It is shameless if it is true that your are not being judged on how well you skate, but on your appearance. If that is the case and I was Tonya, I would be raging.

I'm old enough have been around when the Tonya-Nancy "incident" happened, so "I, Tonya" was an interesting story with background that I didn't know. It might not be completely true, but a fun ride nevertheless with a decent mix of comedy and pathos. And a good soundtrack as well. Hang around to the credits to see some video of the real participants.

People say that a lot of liberties were taken with this movie. But I think that if even half of this story is true - wow, what a life! It's amazing that she made it as far as she did. I enjoyed this film and would recommend it to anyone looking to watch something shocking, jaw droppping, funny at times and a different take on what was portrayed in the media.

Quotes from mom:
Tonya's my 5th child from husband number 4. She was always a handful. And I guess we spoiled her. Which is a goddamned hat trick when you haven't got shit your entire life. Still, I drove her to competitions, practices. I sewed her all her costumes. But to her, her mother's a monster. Generally people either love Tonya or are... not big fans.
Just like people either love America or are not big fans. Tonya was totally American.
===
They want a wholesome American family? ... Well. It's not gonna be easy.. But I could pull that outta my ass.
===
I like your hair pulled back like that. You look young.
-I'm 23, mom.
===
I'm not here to tell you I told you so. I'm not..
-Why are you here? What do you want?
I want you to know... I don't know. That I am on your side.

I'm trying to skate and I keep... falling in front of everyone. While... Nancy gets her own private rink where someone catches her before she falls.
===
You're a taker. Every cent I made went to your skating and you took it. What do you want?
-Jesus!
Well this was a stupid fxcking idea..
-Was anything I ever did good enough for you?
You were soft.
- At three?
I made you a fighter. You never had a chance...
-You fxcked with my head. You made me think I could skate best when my life was shxt. And now my life is shzt. You made that fzcking real for me. I don't want that!
You would've picked it in a heartbeat! You should be thanking me. Not blaming me.
-Did you...? I mean when I was a kid, did you ever love me? Or anything?
You think Sonia Henie's mother loved her? Poor fzckin' you. I didn't stay home making apple brown Bettys. No, I made you a champion! Knowing you'd hate me for it. That's the sacrifice a mother makes. I wish I had a mother like me. Instead of nice. Nice gets you shzt.

But there's no smoking on the ice.
-Oh well, I'll smoke it quietly then.

I hit her one time, with a hairbrush.

She stands out because she looks like she chops wood every morning.

Yeah, and I waitress full time to pay for your coaching.
- Yes, but she's not my child.
===
I don't know, Tonnie. I would never be with someone who fzckin' hit me.
- You hit dad.
That's different.

You skated like a graceless bull dyke! I was embarrassed for you.

But do you think that CBS who was showin' the games was gonna let this ginormous
ratings fxcker not happen?
===
Your Honor. I don't have an education. All I know is skating. That's all I know. And I.. I'm no one... If I can't skate... I'm not... I mean, I'm not some monster. I just... I'm trying to do the best in what I know how to. ... please. Please! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate! Just send me to jail and then I can still skate...!
===
The people still wanted to see me. So I became a lady boxer. I mean, why not? Violence was always what I knew anyway. America, you know... They want someone to love... but they want someone to hate. And they want it easy. But what's easy? And the haters always say, Tonya Tell the truth. But there's no such thing as truth. I mean it's bullshxt. Everyone has their own truth.
