Jake and his girlfriend are on a drive to visit his parents at their remote farm. After dinner at the family home, things begin to get worryingly strange. And when he leaves her stranded in a snowstorm at an abandoned high school later that night, what follows is a chilling exploration of psychological frailty and the limitations of reality.

Disquieting.
This book is one of the better psychological thrillers I have read recently. I took it home and had it done before I had to go to work the next day. While I had a pretty clear idea of what was happening, I was still shocked at the end of the book. With any book, it wasn't perfect. There is always something that doesn't fit or seems unnecessary. However the ending makes some of those things forgivable.
I gave the book a four star rating because I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Plus, it has been a week since I read the book and I am still caught up in what happened. To me that is a sign of a great book.
"You will be scared, but you won't know why?" Honestly, I still don't! Suspense that doesn't go anywhere at all in the story.
Well, at least it's a quick read.
Anyone who has spent any time with the genre, whether in novel or movie form, should pick up on the "twist" fairly early. After that, the whole exercise becomes a rote connect-the-dots, waiting for the end to finally happen.
There are so many points where you just want the narrator to make a smart decision, but of course, they and you (the reader) are locked on the rails of this by-the-numbers "thriller."
I could not (and did not) put this book down once I started reading it. Reid's genius is not just in keeping the reader creeped out and uncomfortable on each page, but in making it so the book cannot be read the same after it's completed once. Highly recommend!
I loved this book! I read it in less than 24 hours. I had a hard time putting it down! I constantly wanted to know what would happen next. I enjoyed the twist ending!
Psychological, metaphysical and macabre tale about a "seemingly" insecure woman going to new boyfriend's family home to meet his parents. The title gives you an idea of what to expect: is she thinking of ending things with her boyfriend or ending her life? The story feels like there is always a feeling of dread of what's to come; introspection of what it really feels like to be lonely and; awareness that things including "life" are constantly being created and recreated. The ending has a fine twist that puts everything together and leaves you thinking of the choice the character made.
I picked this up based on a powell's review. This is essentially a book written by M. Night Shyamalan ie: cheap, twisty and ultimately disappointing. Its a quick read but a scarier thought than the premise of this book is that I once considered spending thirty dollars on it.
I'm seeing some mixed reviews but I really enjoyed this book. If you're looking for a page turner and a nail biter, this is for you. The ending may be a bit cliched, but it is still a great story, and the perfect length for a quick weekend or vacation read.
I honestly was enjoying the book in the beginning. The imagery was creepy and off putting and I was looking forward to where the story was going. As I neared the end, I started making predictions as to how the story will end and really hoping that my predictions were wrong. The author couldn't possibly be leading up to the most modern cliche in story telling, could he? The millennial version of "and I woke up and it was all a bad dream"? Sadly, yes. It was such a cop out that it made the whole story completely moot. It's not that it was confusing or cerebral, it's simply that it was stupid and easy. The saving grace was at least it was only a 200 page story. I only wasted a little bit of my life.
