I did not find this book to be appropriate for young children. On every page, there is a hidden demonic image juxtaposed against some image of Christianity or Judaism. Almost every single page contains a religious image (ie. cross, ixoye fish, clergyman, cathedral, book of the Bible, Star of David, hymnal, etc.) juxtaposed against an image of darkness (ie. slithering snakes, serpents, demons, frogs, references to 666, etc.) In some cases, the demonic images are attacking the religious images in some way. It would've been easy for the illustrator to stick with normal, everyday themes. Instead, you see such things as dripping gunk being spilled all over the 10 commandments. I thought I was going to get a beautifully illustrated children's book. Instead, I got something that was dark and creepy. In addition to the weird anti-religious themes, there were other things that were downright inappropriate:
-several swastikas (seriously -- in a children's book?!??)
-images of drowning
-switchblade knives lying all over
-an animal being kidnapped at gunpoint by other animals with machine guns.
Since when did images of violence and symbols of genocide become appropriate for young children? Gross.

Wow--seeing this again made me remember how much I loved it as a kid. Stunning illustrations.

I loved this book as a child! I picked it up for my students and I think I enjoyed reading it again more than they did! I love the Crimson cats and the Nautical Newts!!! One of my favourite alphabet books. My only qualm is that some of the letter words are a bit difficult. The kids dont know what 'nautical' or 'abacus'.

This book celebrates 30 years this year! So much in here to engage young readers. My favourite page of course is "Lazy lions lounging in the local library"...! What's yours?

An alphabet book with sentences written only in the given letter. The images mimic these silly sentences with Bases realistic art style. Even the additional images all start with said letter. Finally there is the hide and seek element that the author warns about in the front page; some are just a single body part, so it can be difficult to spot.
