Honestly, I don't know what has moved me more--this delightful graphic novel or all the supportive and loving comments about it here. Cheers to author-artist Jen Wang and cheers to everyone who loved Wang's vivid, heartwarming "The Prince and the Dressmaker" as much I did and do.

Wang leaves Sebastian's happily ever after resolution a bit ambiguous, and as he's a teenager when we meet him perhaps that's as should be. As others have noted, this story works perfectly well as a standalone But I too came to care for Frances and Sebastian so much I'm hoping for a sequel that follows their further challenges and adventures. I'm rooting for them both!

This is an absolutely amazing graphic novel: awesome art, awesome plot, awesome characters!
Frances is a dressmaker who ends up making dresses for the Prince of Belgium, Sebastian, who loves to wear dresses. A true novel of struggle, acceptance, and of love, "The Prince and the Dressmaker" is definitely in my top five graphic-stand-alones.

CHARACTERS: Frances and Sebastian both went through very good development, with changing motives and reactions (the two keys for good characters) and there was something of myself in each of them. Whether or not Sebastian is gender-fluid (That's what I think, though I'm not sure because WHAT he is isn't mentioned, only WHO he is.) Frances was hardworking, a perfectionist, someone who wants to break out of the mold. We're all like that inside, and it was wonderful to read this book.

PLOT: Amazing. Balanced, with touching moments and tense moments. It drew me in and didn't let go until I finished, and I'm still thinking about it. There's a lot that we could draw from this book to apply to our daily life.

ACCURACY: Was there actually a dress-wearing Prince of Belgium named Sebastian? I don't think so, but in this case, our world is used as something we can recognize in order to put the rest of the events into context. The who's-who of the exact time period don't really matter here: it's a fantasy story, pure and simple.

RECOMMENDATION: I'm definitely buying this for my friend's birthday, and maybe for myself at some point. It is a really good story, but if you're thrifty, check it out from the library before you make a decision. It is a good re-read. I enjoyed every moment. Cheers for Jen Wang!

This Graphic Novel is excellent! The storyline is a great modern twist on a classic that encourages accepting yourself and others for who they are. The art is a fresh cool style, and the characters are very realistic, and the pacing is great. I am glad it is a stand alone so there is no cliffhanger, but I hope the author writes more stories like this!

I first picked this book up because of the front cover and art and then was drawn in even further with the story. Frances & Prince Sebastian are each trying to figure out who they truly are and shine to the best of their ability even with expectations put on them from friends, family and the public in general. This book had some really great moments and definitely made me smile and cheer different characters on.

This is such a lovely story, with a cast of characters you are really rooting for. They really each come in to their own, and their relationship develops sweetly and slowly through the book. The time period plays secondary to the story, and the real visual star is the fashion!

This book was absolutely wonderful. A completely relatable story about two teenagers figuring out who they are and how to be true to themselves in a world that sometimes makes that feel unsafe. The drawings are beautiful, the characters are easy to love, and the fashion is daring and eye catching. If you're looking for a graphic novel with a beautiful and heartwarming story about finding the courage to be yourself and loving the people in your life for exactly who they are, then this might be the one for you!

This graphic novel is important and wonderful. It offers an amazing discussion regarding gender identity, labels, and what it means to stand up and be who you are. It's heartwarming, fun, but it is also very dark and emotional.

The story follows two characters: Prince Sebastian, a young prince whose parents want him to get married to a princess, and Frances who dreams of making beautiful gowns and one day having a fashion show. Their lives collide when Prince Sebastian sees one of Frances' designs and hires her on to be his dressmaker. Frances and Sebastian form a beautiful friendship, and it's one that is memorable as it is sweet. Frances accepts Sebastian for who he is, and in turns tries to help him gain the courage to tell his parents that he enjoys wearing dresses.

There is so much beauty in Jen Wang's artwork and storytelling. Her characters are expressive, gentle, and have such strong desires to be loved and accepted by others. Sebastian and Frances are characters that are easy to love, you want them to succeed and be loved, and you want them to see worth in themselves. They get such fantastic growth throughout the story, and I found myself getting emotional during certain parts given their was such shocking moments.

The Prince and the Dressmaker is a wonderful graphic novel full of heart. It's a read where you'll cheer the characters on, fall completely in love with them, pick them up when they fail, and give them all the encouragement to keep going. This is one beautiful story that deserves to be read, and reread. I can only hope more people love and give this book a chance, because it will warm your heart and shatter it at the same time.
