From the Atlantic to the Pacific via the fabled Northwest Passage, Billy Connolly searches for the beauty of ordinariness and bumps into many weird and wonderful people along the way, from the fiddle-playing scarecrow-maker to the septuagenarian pioneer who still lives as her ancestors did. He learns how not to be intimate with bears and how to pan for gold. He herds cattle, attempts the finer complexities of the Inuit language, and kisses a cod.At this pivotal moment in history when this once isolated wilderness is about to be invaded by modern-day speculators, the inimitable Billy retraces the steps of romantics and nutters, those looking for love or just hoping to get rich. He leads us through this land¡s incredible past.

This story is available on dvd as well. Billy Connolly traveled from east to west in Canada, via the northwest passage and his take on our country is not only humorous but also loving and expressive. Good book. Lots to think about and lots of laughs as well.

Excellent adventure told in a warm, engaging manner. Learned more about Canada's north in this book than I did in elementary & high school. Best bits are Billy's personal reflections and feelings about the trip. Too good to miss!
