Beneath the majestic towers of the Alhambra, Granada's cobbled streets resonate with music and secrets. Sonia Cameron knows nothing of the city's shocking past; she is here to dance. But in a quiet cafT, a chance conversation and an intriguing collection of old photographs draw her into the extraordinary tale of Spain's devastating civil war. Seventy years earlier, the cafT is home to the close-knit Ramirez family. In 1936, an army coup led by Franco shatters the country's fragile peace, and in the heart of Granada the family witnesses the worst atrocities of conflict. Divided by politics and tragedy, everyone must take a side, fighting a personal battle as Spain rips itself apart.

This book was one of the "recommended but not chosen" selections and it so far surpassed "Driving over Lemons" (the one originally chosen) that the three of us who read both books alerted the remaining six members and we chose The Return instead. Both were about relocating, but The Return covered a family dynamic with a 50 year spread, a mystery, and tons of information about the Spanish Civil war, dancing, and survival. MUCH to talk about!!

Vivid and visual book. The story line that connects the past and present is predicable, but the beauty of the images, and the tragedies the Spanish Civil War brought to the families, communities, and the whole country is memorable. Worthwhile read, especially for those not closely familiar with events of the Spanish Civil war.

What an outstanding book--well written, descriptions so real that I could actually picture sceneries. Good history book of Civil War in Spain as well as story. Can't wait to go to Spain.

This is an excellent book. It gives you an insight into the civil war in Spain throught the eyes of a family living in Granada.
