This is a fascinating mystery series about an educated free black man in early 19th century New Orleans. He is a doctor and a musician, but still struggles to keep his head above water financially, and keep from being kidnapped by slavers.

That he is a good observer and very smart leads him into detecting, and there's a mystery in each story, but the real entertainment is the descriptions of the life he and his friends lead in that time and place.

In this story Benjamin's wife becomes pregnant and his bank goes bust, so he takes a job that his friend offers to go out west in search of a murderer.
