After leaving her disapproving relatives in order to surprise her father, Liberty is shocked to find that he will not be joining her after all. He has been murdered in Calais! And after a short visit there, Liberty heads back to England to get to the bottom of the mystery and clear her father's name. Along the way she makes two steadfast new friends, Rancie the horse and her handler Amos. Both will come in handy in the end when Liberty comes across a dangerous secret. The characters are well drawn with a fascinating story line that propels this story along at a finely tuned gallop. I am looking forward to the next installment.

This book starts off slow but becomes more exciting as the reader delves deeper. The main character Liberty Lane shows her ability to survive on her own in Victorian England, under difficult circumstances. Her father is murdered and she is determined to discover the details. She goes 'under cover' as a governess in order to find out the truth behind his murder. Liberty is in more danger than she realizes and must protect herself as well as two other women whom she meets along the way.
