A girl and her little sister, displace from their home, and forced to live in a creepy run down house, with an aunt they barely know; a tidal marsh that makes the land around the house dangerous for kids; an ancient and horrifying secret held closely by the villagers.
Looking for gothic-y goodness? You've found it!
Truly spooky! I kept the lights on as I read; Cora and Mimi feel like real children--children who can be tired, spiteful or scared--and Guerdon Hall felt like a real nightmare--an ancient building, sinking into the swamp, its windows nailed shut and its old kitchen bricked up. Barraclough uses masterful horror technique in Long Lankin and maintains the chills until the very end. Fans of Shirley Jackson in particular might enjoy this tale of haunted gentry and crumbling castles.
