Explores the lives of two couples, one Jamaican and the other English, whose worlds intertwine in post-World War II Britain, at a turning point in the long relationship between the two countries. It is a story of tender emotion and sparkling wit, of crossings taken and passages lost, of shattering compassion and of reckless optimism in the face of insurmountable barriers.

I wish I could give it 10 stars. I was glad to see a movie with adoption in the story. When my mother gave birth, her family was told I died. I was actually given to another family.

I was really moved and wished the story could have gone on longer, I wondered if Hortense ever found out who the babies father is.

In a word.....Marvellous.

Excellent! Characterization was spot on...Hortense reminded me of a friend who had come to America years ago for college and returned to her native land, then returned to America and stayed. I as well felt the ending was too abrupt and that another episode would have worked. But, apparently the producers choice was only what we viewed.
Historical value, worthy of the watch.

Excellent acting, beautiful scenery (all too brief) of Jamaica, compelling characters, and a good reminder that racism is not just a US problem. Like many viewers, I felt this could have been a much longer story because it stops just when the main characters' real lives begin.

An aside: it is very easy to watch this two part series in 2018 and make connections between what happened with Great Briton and Jamaica after WWII and what happened between the US and Puerto Rico after a recent hurricane.

I thoroughly enjoyed this drama. Was very sorry as where it ended. I would have liked it to keep going. It had all the makings of a very good series. The racial elements/truths were portrayed well. It just left me wanting to see more...but it left your imagination to run wild with probable outcomes, not too many with positive outcomes given the time in history. Very entertaining and I recommend watching it.

A fascinating story with great performances with such a talented ensemble of world-class actors playing original, well-drawn characters .
The film retains its balance as it weaves in and out of characters' lives, while never short-changing any of them. FANTASTIC!

I felt that Hortense was played too broadly and seemed more like a caricature than a character. I would have liked more shades of grey in this study of black and white issues in post-war Britain. Still, it's a better than average movie and I recommend it.
