Explores the lives of two couples, one Jamaican and the other English, whose worlds intertwine in post-World War II Britain, at a turning point in the long relationship between the two countries. It is a story of tender emotion and sparkling wit, of crossings taken and passages lost, of shattering compassion and of reckless optimism in the face of insurmountable barriers.

A fascinating story with great performances with such a talented ensemble of world-class actors playing original, well-drawn characters .
The film retains its balance as it weaves in and out of characters' lives, while never short-changing any of them. FANTASTIC!

I felt that Hortense was played too broadly and seemed more like a caricature than a character. I would have liked more shades of grey in this study of black and white issues in post-war Britain. Still, it's a better than average movie and I recommend it.

A facinating look at racial issues during WW2.

Story within a story, and an honest revelation of how the Brits treated their supposed compatriots. Racism towards Blacks on the other side of the Pond. Worth the view.

A Masterpiece PBS Classic.

Deals with the lives of two couples: one Jamaican and the other English.

Their worlds intertwine in post-world war II Britain, at a turning point in the relationship between the two countries.

A perfect drama.

good movie. It still shocks me how we can treat each other so badly. I needed my tissues...
