When the bonfire finally dies down on Guy Fawkes night 1857, the charred remains of a popular stationmaster's body are found. Who would possibly want to murder a man so universally liked? It's the question Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and Sergeant Victor Lemming ask when they arrive in Exeter at the request of the South Devon Railway. Yet, as they investigate the stationmaster's life, they realize he is not as popular as they first believed. With a scorned jilted lover, a resentful colleague and a violent elder brother among the many suspects, the detectives must use all their skill and wit to solve the case.

If I knew how to give a book five stars, I'd give the Stationmaster's Farewell" all I could. I like period mysteries, and this is one of the most enjoyable I've read. It sets the stage in 1857 Wales without bogging the reader down with details and color. The reader can see the author's cinematic background coming through in the crisp segues between scenes. I found this very readable and engrossing. I'm putting others by Marston on reserve to read more.

Everyone loves the stationmaster, who leads a lonely life, since his wife died, but only the waitress in the café would he trust with his beloved canary, when he was away from home. It is she who helps Colbeck and Leeming to find the murderer among several suspects, who want his money, his position, or his love.
