The text is alternately engaging and dry. The narration is mechanical and without feeling.I was reminded, at times, of the history recital given by the mouse in Alice In Wonderland who said," This is the driest thing I know..... "William the Conqueror, whose cause was favoured by the pope, was soon submitted to by the English, who wanted leaders, and had been of late much accustomed to usurpation and conquest. Edwin and Morcar, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria--"' You just want to shut the darn thing off !

And what can you think of a narrator who mispronounces important words like Grisaille and Cellini ?
