Written in the 1940’s, this essay follows E.B. White’s stream of consciousness musings on New York City. He acknowledges that any writing about New York is outdated as soon it is written, since the city is always changing. A lot of the writing seems very dated, but it’s still a very poetic view of the city. There is an eerie premonition of 9/11 towards the end.

A beautiful, poetic essay about New York City by a master writer. E.B. White uses jewel-like words and astute observations to give his impression of what New York City was like at a particular time (when I was a young teenager). Chillingly, he even foretells a 9/11 scenario over 50 years ago. This short, crystalline book is a timeless classic.
