When I was introduced to the Fabs in the very early 70s (just about when they broke up, or very shortly thereafter), my Fab friends who had earlier attempted to pants me in one of theirs' front yard, on Barneson Street at Quince Street, recommended either this one, or ABBEY ROAD. I chose the latter. I've since been a "later-Beatles fan." I've nothing against the early stuff, except it sounds derivative to me: too many covers of earlier artists. YOU REALLY GOT A HOLD ON ME, a cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, is still powerfully emotive, but, then, so are OH DARLING, and SHE'S SO HEAVY from ABBEY ROAD. Long before the Carpenters recorded it, PLEASE MR. POSTMAN was recorded, complete with furious handclapping percussion, and placed on this excellent LP. Too many covers: I appreciated the lads' songwriting capabilities from my first listen to the WHITE ALBUM, checked out from the downtown* library. Yes, 1968 published, manufactured in vinyl ( as Neil Young says, 'a warmer sound.') *not this downtown. NOT A SECOND TIME, is that on this? That is as much of a classic Lennon early track as is NO REPLY, on BEATLES '65 is.

This is not the "White Album" yet KCLS has patron reviews of library reviews describing the wrong album below. Now that we are done with that problem......I love the album. It is a very young and exciting fab four who are loving every moment of these songs. The tracks are early Beatles when they were just becoming noticed. These tracks are what would lead to record albums fan buying millions of this very album. (There just might be some great material here!)

The most remarkable thing about the White Album to me is the amazing diversity of music contained within its tracks. I can't think of another record that comes close to matching it for the sheer diversity of styles and sounds. If you are bored listening to this one or can't find anything you like, well, you're a tough nut to crack.

Has some great songs, but generally is my least liked Beatles album, because it has the only Beatles songs I actually hate; such as Helter Skelter. Also has the worst album cover by far. Who thought a plain white cover was exciting? Anyone think The White Album cover is more interesting than say Sgt. Peppers?

Most overrated Beatles album ever. Always heard of how great the "White Album" was since the late 70's when as a teen and just started H.S. I am a big Beatles fan and have most of their EMI, Apple, or Capitol LP releases in my collection but not this one as it was always a costly double album with only a few songs familiar with. Thanks to KCLS, hearing the whole album for the first time. other than the few already know, most of these songs are not very listenable and do not bring any source of pleasure at all. Their Sgt. Pepper LP deserves the accolades it gets but not this double CD piece of mostly garbage.

Some of the earliest songs (1963) from the Beatles (aka. The Fab Four).

This, along with Sgt. Peppers, are probably the best Beatles albums. Interestingly, my one of my favorite Beatle's songs on this album is widely considered one of their worst, namely "Don't Pass Me By." This tune demonstrates Ringo's capabilities, which were vastly underestimated during the tenure of the band.

I'm not saying it's the best Beatles album, but I'm not not saying that either.

"The White Album" may not be as cohesive as the back half of "Abbey Road" or as paradigm shifting as "Sergeant Pepper," but man, it's one hell of an album. Wonderful track after wonderful track. It's terrifically diverse, tremendously fun, and endlessly listenable.

PS: That moment when "Bungalow Bill" transitions to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" gets me every time. Love it.

PPS: Sure "Revolution 9" is you know, whatever, but when every single other song on the album is this great, I can overlook and even appreciate—depending on my mood—a sound collage.

this album was the first I ever borrowed from a library. HEY BUNGALOW BILL really got to my childlike ears, maybe it was Yoko singing along in the chorus, with, "But when he looked so fierce,"and I am sure I liked the jet sounds of Back In the USSR. There just is not a weak song here, and there are 32, in all. YER BLUES is a real goodun, also. I'm glad I stopped smoking, decades ago. HONEY PIE is good, with what George claimed to be John's best guitar playing as the interlude. DON'T PASS ME BY is decent. What was I smoking then? Anything, including butts I could find, on the ground. Merits, Camels, Benson and Hedges, Tareytons, Marlboros (my original brand, the brand Elaine bought for herself and her kids), oh any old kind you were smoking, and I could ask you for. Yes, that stop-start song by John Lennon which references the conflicting desires to smoke or not to smoke, called IM SO TIRED, is on this album. What a gem. He even references Sir Walter Raleigh ('He was such a stupid get'). That song got me to thinking, up in that apartment on Hermann street that Craig and Julie were renting, and later rented by Jocelyn. I visited one time to Craig and Julie. the one time I visited Joss, Roddy Bottum, keyboardist for Faith No More, was there. I don't know why he was there; I was playing Surprise Surprise Sweet Bird of Paradox on her music player. Roddy turned up his nose at this. SSSP can be found on Walls and Bridges, John's L.A. album that also has Elton john on it (and is likely the finest of his solo work: just listen to SCARED. harrowing. STEEL AND GLASS (who is it? who is it?). NOBODY LOVES YOU WHEN YER DOWN AND OUT ("Everybody loves you when yer 6 foot in the ground"); the instrumental, BEEF JERKY. Julian, the first son, sitting in on drums, for a YA YA outtake. PIGGIES, and SAVOY TRUFFLE could be the best songs of the whole collection, and they were by Beatle George. hardly anyone knows him as a trenchant social commentator. that role didn't start for him on this album..check out RUBBER SOUL, for the beginnings, with the oft-underrated THINK FOR YOURSELF. not to forget DON'T BOTHER ME, on this album, WITH THE BEATLES. I don't know how so many were misled, WTBs is the album being discussed here: The WHITE ALBUM is elsewhere in this catalog, most likely, under that title. Well, well, well, well: we music fans are not like accountants, or mathematicians, after all. . . . or even those who clean houses for a living.
