Somewhere in this 1000+ page tome is a good story or two or three.
Many good ideas. Some parts are great, others drag on. A good editor would have trimmed this down a fair amount.
This would have been better as a two or three volume series.

The first 150 pages are a little laboring as Hamilton lays out the pieces of a very large chess board. Once he sets the pieces in motion it becomes quite a ride. Sometimes the story (or intersecting stories) borders on farcical stereotype - the swashbuckling captain who beds at least one girl in every port, the hatred of the dead against the living, or the high society people who engage in highly immoral behavior while in private

Aside from that one point, the book is otherwise a total escapist space opera with heroes, villains, high technology, fights, lots of sex, philosophy, theology, competing philosophies, and lots and lots of characters (even a few kids thrown in though fortunately not in a saccharine-sweet telling).

One last point: I picked up Hamilton because I ran out of Iain Banks Culture novels to read and wanted something else. He's not at the same level as Banks, but he does have a good command of the language and makes a rich storytelling. Think of him as a cross between Niven and Banks.

Just finished this one and I'm in a daze! What a rip-snorting adventure! And brainy too! I'm in awe of Mr. Hamilton's prowess! THIS is what SF is all about! I'm a lucky guy: there's two more gigantic tomes in the series and (due to the lousy economy) I don't have a job to cut into my reading time!!
