"Based on the explosive novel by Vassilis Vassilikos, COSTA-GAVRAS? Academy award winning masterpiece presents a controversial yet fictionalized account of the events surrounding the assassination of democratic Greek politician Gregoris Lambrakis in 1963. When a liberal politician is murdered during a peace demonstration, certain high-powered right wing figures make a concerted effort to not only conceal their involvement but ultimately cover up the murder in a cunning conspiracy. Jean-Louis Trintignant stars as the investigating magistrate who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth, indict the assassins and ultimately deliver justice and restore hope to the people. Also featuring Yves Montand and Irene Papas, Z is a landmark film, notorious for its dark satirical view of Greek politics, and capturing the sensitivity and outrage that rocked the status quo. Never before has a film created such a political stir" --Container.

This is a 1969 political thriller directed by Costa-Gavras, based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Vassilis Vassilikos.
The film presents a thinly fictionalized account of the events surrounding the assassination of democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963.
With its satirical view of Greek politics, its dark sense of humor, and its downbeat ending, the film captures the outrage about the military dictatorship that ruled Greece at the time of its making.

[Within the space of a year: Lumumba of the DRC, Diem of Vietnam, Kennedy of the USA - - both Diem and JFK did not want American troops in Vietnam, and Lambrakis of Greece - - a busy time for the CIA, unfortunately!]

A truly classic and chilling film about the assassination of political activist, Gregoris Lambrakis, in Greece in 1963. Should be required viewing in any history class.

"Hailed as one of the greatest political thrillers ever made", it's based on the assassination of a left wing/democratic politician in Greece in 1963. There's a lot of real-life background about Greece's political climate in the post-WW II years in the extras and/or commentary.

Good film made me feel like I am observing all the situation in front of the screen. Criminal government was an important issue in Turkey too, still is. Law and justice can be dirty but still there are good ones who do the right thing.

Fantastic film. See this one and Missing -- they sure don't make them like this anymore. Solid Criterion release.

This is powerful film-making. The director has a direct link to the unstable political history of Greece and, indeed, all of the portrayals and actions on screen are intended to evoke true events. Costa-Gavras also knew he was making a film, and to him that meant that it should entertain and resonate for years to come. This should be required viewing in high-schools.
