A searing and profound examination of brotherhood set in the timeless Sierra Nevadan frontier. Frank and Jerry Lee Flannigan work odd jobs, drink hard, and drift from motel to motel. Their only escape is through Frank's fantastic stories and Jerry Lee's rich illustrations. Everything changes when Jerry Lee is involved in a hit-and-run accident, which forces the brothers across the state to the home of Frank's old flame, Annie.

There are two DVD's based on Wlly Vlautin books available here, the other being "Lean on Pete'. I'd recommend going with 'Pete' first. The trailer for this is up here; that would be a sort of first date for you. Charms are on view that might entice.
In another of his books, 'The Free', the central figure, a much traumatized war veteran, withdraws from the land of the living ; his reports from his imagined world are printed in italics; here, narrated stories are given animated representation.
The films were made by different directors; this one was made by a pair of brothers doing their first direction; they have ample credits as producers. They have done good work putting this together, so it could be seen. However, 'put together', for me it falls short of unforgettable, whereas "Pete' might just be.
However it might suffer by comparison, it probably would be in the top 10 percent of mostly non-violent films adult English speakers would sit through. Can't say why it seemed to be such a stumbling block to me that these two guys do not look like they could be brothers. Maybe they just think they're brothers.
