Good girl, bad boy. It’s a popular romantic pairing and rightly so. It’s one type of the classic “opposites attract” tropes and demonstrates how people can learn something from other people whose characters seem to be poles apart from their own.

But Ms. Andre cannily turns the idea on its head. Here it is the beauty out to beguile the beast. Winsome, cute and sweet-natured Brooke Jansen is tired of being the good girl, the woman who made one nearly fatal mistake when she was a teenager and who has never been allowed to forget it. So when she sets out to seduce the wild boy next door, Rafe Sullivan, she does so with a vengeance. She’s got a lot of time to make up for, after all.

The ensuing sexual shenanigans are spicy, all right. Brooke constantly catches Rafe off kilter, breaking through his defenses and making his jaw drop with her combination of innocence and forthright sensuality. But of even more interest is how Brooke navigates around Rafe’s tender spots. She holds to her part of making this a summer fling, much to his surprise. She’s not clingy, fawning or demanding after sex like most of the women he’s known. Instead, he’s the one who tries holding on to her even as he fights against the love swelling upwards inside himself like a tidal wave.

Rafe’s nosy sister Mia has the situation pegged from the start. Acting almost like a Mary Sue, she lets both Brooke and Rafe know about the pitfalls inherent in their little no-strings-attached relations. But thankfully her presence isn’t as heavy handed as you might fear.

“The Way You Look Tonight” delights with its smoldering lustiness and its artless warmth. May all the Sullivan novels be as well played as this one.
