This is a first-rate spy novel taking place in the Middle East just before the Six-Day War - the West Bank and East Jerusalem were still under Jordanian control and the Golan (here called the Galilee) Heights under Syrian control. The action is fast moving and the characters are well drawn. Morris West manages to be fairly neutral and explain the motivations of all sides. To be compared with John LeCarre's Little Drummer Girl, written only a few years later.
