An enchanting tale of courage and sacrifice for young readers and adults by the wildly popular George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the series that inspired HBO's Emmy Award-winning GAME OF THRONES. Lavish illustrations by acclaimed artist Luis Royo enrich this captivating and heartwarming story of a young girl and her dragon.

From ancient times, the ice dragon was a creature of legend and fear, for no man had ever tamed one. When it flew overhead, it left in its wake desolate cold and frozen land. But Adara was not afraid. For Adara was a winter child, born during the worst freeze that anyone, even the Old Ones, could remember.

Adara could not remember the first time she had seen the ice dragon. It seemed that it had always been in her life, glimpsed from afar as she played in the frigid snow long after the other children had fled the cold. In her fourth year she touched it, and in her fifth year she rode upon its broad, chilled back for the first time. Then, in her seventh year, on a calm summer day, fiery dragons from the North swooped down upon the peaceful farm that was Adara's home. And only a winter child--and the ice dragon who loved her--could save her world from utter destruction.

this book has a number of deaths and violence involved so age suitability has to be re-evaluated.

this is a book for people who don't expect every book to be a fairytale. (a lot of people die in this story. either getting burned to death or getting frozen.)

George R.R. Martin's only children's book owes much to the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and other early children's writers who tackled dark thematic material in their fantasy worlds, even down to its more antiquated writing style. The Ice Dragon almost reads like a fable that has been passed down through generations.

My 10 year old liked this book a lot and he's not big into reading. The only downfall is that this is the only child's book I could find of this author.

My son in grade 4 just read this aloud to me and we really enjoyed it. A slim, fast-paced book with absolutely stunning illustrations by Luis Royo. Book does contain some very vivid battle imagery including deaths.

From the beginning, Adara was not like other children. She was a “winter child”, and she was not afraid of the ice dragon that inspired so much dread in everyone else when it flew overhead. This unique story of a wonderful friendship and a dangerous quest was written by George R. R. Martin, author of HBO’s “Game of Thrones”.

Great sci-fi for kids...for kids that don't expect everything to be a fairytale.
