"A witty, entertaining mystery featuring a hilarious, sharp as a tack new amateur sleuth from the critically acclaimed author of The Invention of Murder. It's just another day at the office for book editor Samantha Clair. Checking jacket copy for howlers, wondering how to break it to her star novelist that her latest effort is utterly unpublishable, lunch scheduled with gossipy author Kit Lowell, whose new book will deliciously dish the dirt on the fashion industry. But little does she know how much trouble Kit's book is about to cause. Before it even goes to print. When police inspector Field turns up at the venerable offices of Timmins & Ross, asking questions about an undelivered package that was addressed to Sam, she knows something is wrong. The messenger sent to deliver the package was murdered, and then Kit goes missing. Suddenly, Sam's nine-to-five life is turned upside down and she is propelled into a criminal investigation. Someone doesn't want Kit's scandalous manuscript published and unless Sam can put the pieces together in time, they'll do anything to stop it. With her deliciously fun, cleverly written debut novel, acclaimed author Judith Flanders introduces readers to an enormously enjoyable, too-smart-for-her-own-good new amateur sleuth, as well as a colorful cast of characters including Sam's witty assistant, effortlessly glamorous mother, and the handsome inspector Field. A whip-smart, impeccably crafted mystery, this tremendously entertaining novel will have readers flying through the pages"--

An enjoyable, quick read. Good characters and good mystery. I read it on a plane and it was perfect.

An ok beach read but not memorable.

I’ll be looking for more books in this series about a London editor who gets caught up in solving a murder mystery. Although at times, the story seems a little ludicrous, it’s the characters that will keep me wanting more, that and the behind the scenes look at the world of publishing.

The first book in the Sam Clair series

Fantastic !!! It was cute, witty, and sometime instead of a chuckle, I laughed out loud. Just the ticket to get my mind off of the depressing Presidential Election.

the front of this book says 'deadly funny' and 'whip smart and devious. I found it bland and found nothing funny anywhere in the book.

This is Ms. Flanders first novel. I have read and enjoyed her non-fiction and her novel is just as good, very smart and funny.

A really fun mystery, good characters, a story which focuses more on the impact of a sensational novel than on murder (refreshing!). Recommended.

Samantha (Sam) Clair is a not young London book editor. This means she’s canny enough to have stayed afloat in that competitive field and smart enough to understand that if one of her favorite authors doesn’t show up for lunch, it means trouble. So when a police officer starts asking about a package the author sent, Sam takes matters into her own hands, inserting herself into the investigation. She also manages to convince both her terrifying efficient mother and the investigating officer that her concerns are justified, all the while making clever observations to the reader like “The woman behind the counter tried to steer me toward neutral tones, but once I took off my sunglasses she agreed 1960s hippie green was the way to go … she said cheerfully, ‘Well, honey, you look like you’re really bad at makeup, but you don’t look … beat up anymore.’” Of course, the power trio solves the mystery, but I found that less important than the author’s snicker-inducing writing.

If you’re looking for an amusing, clever cozy mystery, get your request in now for A Murder of Magpies.
