I read this many years ago and will never forget it. The stories of the sled dogs and ponies was heartbreaking; the hardship of the men indescribable. It is understandable that this book was never been out of print.

Brilliant. An understated classic of unbelievable hardship. The worst journey in the world is not Scott's trip to the Pole, but the three man trip in complete darkness for the eggs of emperor penguins in which unimaginable disasters befall them.
