This was a fun read. The theme of "people aren't always as they appear" is a given for a spy novel, but this novel gives it a more thorough treatment than most by tying it into the insecurities and social anxieties of adolescence. The mystery-adventure parts of the novel were exciting, with some twists being obvious but the major ones managing to surprise me even though I was looking for them.

A nice mix of spy thriller action and intriguing character development. Hale may have been trained from birth by a top secret organization to be a top field agent, but he breaks the mold in all kinds of ways. Unexpected and fun. 3.5 stars.
