In Heir to the Shadows, Jaenelle's vampiric, adoptive father, Saetan, and her foster-family of demons shelter her. To restore her memory and emotional balance, they move to Kaeleer, where Jaenelle befriends the kindred animals with magical and communicative powers and gathers a circle of young Queens. She also heals Lucivar, Daemon's half brother, who offers a brothers' love and a warrior's fealty. As she recovers strength and memory, Jaenelle resolves to restore Daemon and cleanse Terreille. Bishop subverts reader's expectations; the "darkest" powers reside in virtuous characters, demons and vampires are kindly, and Jaenelle's adolescence is more comically normal than horrific. Her vibrant characters and descriptions will keep readers hooked, anxiously awaiting what promises to be a riveting conclusion.

Tigers, and wolves, and unicorns... oh my. This second book was exhilarating to read. The world building and characters are awesome. Onto book three!

OMG! The Black Jewel Trilogy is the very very best I have read ever. I am sorry David Gemmell I loved your books and you are number 2 in my best ever reading list. I finished 'Daugther of the Blood' in a little over 5 hours and the same thing for 'Heir to the Shadows' with lots of crying and snickering and tonight I am starting ' Queen of the Darkness'. These books you can read and enjoy for ever and ever. I hope you pick up these books or ebooks to enjoy so if you have family tell them to fend for themselves.

Terrible writing.
The story had potential, the writing killed it.

The story seemed to meander, and much of what alluded to, I wish had been included. But the climax was outstanding, the humor apt, and I loved the world Anne Bishop built.

This was an excellent sequel to Daughter of the Blood in all ways. Jaenelle is growing up and makes friends she'll keep throughout her life. It was an excellent story and kept me riveted from cover to cover.
