This 1952 novel is by the team of Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, who wrote under the name Boileau-Narejac. They add an icy, existential, and very French quality to the crime thriller and this was the basis for the film "Diabolique." Anotehr book they wrote was adapted for Hitchcock's "Vertigo."
