This is a great accessible story about World War I told from the point of view of a young reporter, discovering the story of British World War I vet Henry Friston and his turtle from Gallipoli.

In shelling during World War I, a British sailor lands in a crater with a tortoise. This historical fiction shares the story of Henry as he smuggles the pet aboard ship. The older Henry tells his story to a reporter, while sharing diary entries. The book includes excellent illustrations by Foreman and photos of the real Henry and his tortoise, both of whom lived to old age.
