With this 2nd installment in her Thomas Lynley series, Elizabeth George draws heavily on the traditions of Sayers, Tey and Christie -- Golden Age writers who repeatedly mixed theatrical artisans into mysteries set amid the English Country Set and did so with very entertaining effect. Originally published in 1989, with "Payment in Blood" George proved herself able to handle the comparisons while showing us characters of our time.

One of the best Lynley/Havers books. Sgt Havers is one of my all time favourite detectives and she is featured well here. An engaging read.

Like the first book in the Lynley series, the characters are more interesting than the mystery.
