Shaun Bythell owns The Bookshop, Wigtown - Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop. It contains 100,000 books, spread over a mile of shelving, with twisting corridors and roaring fires, and all set in a beautiful, rural town by the edge of the sea. A book-lover's paradise? Well, almost ... In these wry and hilarious diaries, Shaun provides an inside look at the trials and tribulations of life in the book trade, from struggles with eccentric customers to wrangles with his own staff, who include the ski-suit-wearing, bin-foraging Nicky. He takes us with him on buying trips to old estates and auction houses, recommends books (both lost classics and new discoveries), introduces us to the thrill of the unexpected find, and evokes the rhythms and charms of small-town life, always with a sharp and sympathetic eye.

What a delightful book. There are many many of us booklovers that have dreamt of owning a second hand bookshop. This is a good reality check on just how hard it is in the current retail climate, no matter where you operate.

We are quickly caught up in the life of the bookshop, its small staff and the village in Scotland where it is set. I must hasten to add this is non fiction, this is real, although I rather think some of the people are made slightly more interesting that they might be in real life.

What fascinated me is the number of well know, interesting and influential people are involved in the life of this bookshop and its owner. It obviously helps when it comes to the annual book-town timewhen people from everywhere descend on the village.

This is one of my 'good reads'.
