"A gruesome triple homicide attracts the interest of Detective Inspector Joona Linna, who demands to investigate the murders. There's only one surviving witness--the boy whose family was killed before his eyes. The boy was supposed to to be the fourth victim, but somehow he survived. He's suffered more than one hundred knife wounds and lapsed into a catatonic state. Desperate for information, Linna enlists Dr. Erik Maria Bark to hypnotize the boy, hoping to uncover the killer through his memories. Bark has sworn he would never do this kind of work again because of the long-term effects it can have on a patient's psyche. But Linna won't relent, and the doctor breaks his promise. When he hypnotizes the victim, a long and terrifying chain of events comes to light. This sensational thriller will have you mesmerized from its very first page"--

Most of the comments I have to agree with. I wanted to like this book so much, but it was like 4 different stories. "Haunted House's?", The medical board turns on the Hypnotist after a reporter reports something on TV? How boring is it to read flashbacks of him putting a hypno group under hypnosis 10 years ago, then the crazy lady of the group rounds them all up and they kidnap the Hypno's son? Huh? Why did the slasher boy kill his family and then cut his little sister in half? Huh? Then he dissappears for half of the book, how did he survive, where did he recover from his wounds? Uggg..... My money back for my time reading this book please.

Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had just the right amount of suspense, drama and horror to encourage me to stay up late into the night, just wanting to know what would happen next. The Hypnotist is about a bunch of complicated crimes, with the lead detective, Joona Linna, trying to solve them all without twisting them together. My only complaint would be that some chapters seemed to be only filler chapters, and dragged on for an unnecessary amount of time. Other than that, the Hypnotist is one of my most favourite books, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who can stomach it. I would rate it a 7/10.

The Hypnotist was a really good read, it was just incredibly long and sometimes, I just don't got time for that. Nonetheless, it was really good with a super thick plotline that kept me wanting to read more by each chapter. Swedish writer Lars Kepler investigated some dark themes with lots of reality, which was really enjoyable for me. I would recommend it if you have a lot of time on your hands.

The first book in the Detective Inspector Joona Linna series

Best seller in France, Germany.. blah, blah, blah. I usually give a story time to develop but, after fifty pages I gave up on this one. An unnecessarily horrific murder to begin with- the five year old girl is cut in half? Then flashbacks occur in the middle of the narrative leaving me confused at first, then annoyed afterwards. Interaction between characters is stilted and just weird. Perhaps a bad translation? Yuk.

Overwhelmingly disappointing. The beginning 100 pages were really good, but always left me wanting more. Flashback was the best part. Characters were not the least bit interesting. Story was choppy, dead ends and inconsistent too many times for a crime novel. The only thing I enjoyed was the short chapters. Im not sure if it was the suspense that made me finish in only 4 sittings, or just trying to see what the author(s) are trying to do.
Don't bother, overhyped, spend your time on something else.

Mystery thriller about a hypnotist who hypnotizes a young boy and unleashes a torrent of mayhem. Nothing revelatory here.

I completely fail to understand all of the praise/prizes heaped on this book. It felt to me that the authors simply threw in every "action" element that is supposed to be in a best-selling thriller (insane serial killer, kidnapping of an ill child, cult activity, infidelity, etc...) with no attempt at a coherent plot. I ended up skimming through most of the book just to find out the plot without having to endure the one-dimensional characters, dark sexual violence and a ridiculous Christmas-themed plot resolution. The "flashback" section was somewhat readable, leading me to wonder if this is less a collaboration than two authors contributing different sections of the novel, of very different quality. This is supposedly the first book in a series, but the "lead" detective is a weak, uninteresting character whom I have no desire to read about again.

Tedious. Tried for 140 pages and just couldn't read any more. So many books, so little time, so little reason to read this one

A long book, too long. Too much detours, too much dead ends. You can almost see that this is a book written by two authors. Not always a good thing. Very average if not flat out disappointing .

If you are a fan of a book like "Blue Monday" by Nicci French, - this book- is absolutely for you. The composition seems to me a little inadequate, as if there are a few plots that do not have fit ending. The stories seems as if broken. Also the part of story that is in the second half could be put at the beginning. And, well, the ending - is too much.
