Her first novel Down in the City was published in 1957, and was followed by The Long Prospect a year later. In 1959 she began working for the ABC and as a book reviewer for the Sydney Morning Herald. In 1960 she published The Catherine Wheel, the story of an Australian law student in London, her only novel not set in Sydney. The Watch Tower appeared in 1966. She was admired by many of her contemporaries, including Patrick White and Christina Stead, and is without doubt among the most important writers of the postwar period in Australia. An Australian classic. This novel tells the story of two sisters whose father dies and mother leaves for the UK whilst they are still teenagers. The older sister marries a damaged man who traps them both through abuse and co-dependence. Set in Sydney in the 1940s and 1950s, this is a portrait of Australian misogyny.

Stunning original novel from Australia. Not always an easy read with the author's observations jumping around. The characters seem as real as if they were standing in the room with you; you could almost reach out and touch them - though some you might not want to.
