With her dream of opening The Cookie Jar taking shape, Hannah's life matches the hectic December hustle and bustle in Lake Eden, especially when she agrees to help recreate a spectacular Christmas Ball from the past in honor of Essie Granger, an elderly local in hospice care. But instead of poring over decadent dessert recipes for the merry festivities, she instantly becomes enthralled by Essie's old notebooks and the tale of a woman escaping danger on the streets of New York. Hannah's surprised by Essie's secret talent for penning crime fiction. She's even more surprised when the story turns real. As Hannah prepares to run a bakery and move out of her mother's house, it'll be a true miracle if she can prevent another Yuletide disaster by solving a mystery as dense as a Christmas fruitcake.

This is as cosy a murder story as you can get - no sign of bodies or evidence - just hearsay repeated around town, and lots of conversation. So don't read this hoping for an intriguing mystery.

What's endearing is the replication of a historical event - a special ball - for an aged member of the community as a last tribute. And THAT is a good theme for a Christmas story!

There are a whole bunch of these books, although this one seems like it is the first, chronologically. There is very little character development, especially regarding Hannah’s grieving mother and her sisters. And do aspiring bakers use so many mixes and Cool Whip?

I had the honor of reading an advance copy of this book. If you like the others in the series you will like this one as well. It's typical Hannah Swensen. Kinda cool to be taken back in time, although I will say, it took a great while to get to the murder.
