Stephen Lewis,a successful author of children's books, takes his three-year-old daughter on a routine Saturday morning trip to the supermarket. This is a fantastic book that is brilliantly written, deeply insightful yet quirky, tragic and darkly comical. Amazing. I'm really looking forward to seeing the BBC movie on PBS starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role on April 1.

I've enjoyed many of the McEwan books, this book is not a favorite among them. He does have an interesting style and a talent for writing books that are snippets of people's lives.

Haunting, with another signature McEwan scene of unbearable suspense - the sequence in the treehouse is unforgettable.

McEwan's other books have received a lot of praise and notice, of course--but this more subtle, perfectly constructed novel may be my favorite by him.
