Like most film adaptations of books, A Monster Calls has to leave out a lot of secondary character development and compress the plot, to its own detriment. Pacing issues and plot holes aside, I did sob non-stop for the last half hour of the film, so bonus points if you enjoy sad movies. This film seems to have been marketed as a children's story, but be warned - if your kids want to watch this, watch it by yourself first and be prepared to have frank discussions about death and losing a parent.
